Sri Lankan bhikkhu and Pali scholar.
Read Bhikkhu H. Saddhatissa for refreshing
and easy, yet accurate and authoritative translation of the
Theravada Canonical Texts, which is specially addressed to eager
students of scriptural study and, also other general work
related to ethics.
Born in 1914 and ordained in 1926.
Studied at the universities of Benares, London and Edinburgh,
proficient in Pali, Sanskrit, Sinhalese, and Hindi. Received his
Ph.D. from University of Edinburgh in 1965. He was the Professor
of Pali at Benares University (1956-1957), lectured at
University of London (1958-1960), Professor of Pali and Buddhism
at University of Toronto (1966-1969) and visiting lecturer at
Oxford University (1973).
Head of London Buddhist Vihara (1957-1985) and President of
British Mahabodhi Society and Sangha Council of Great Britain,
on the executive council of the famed Pali Text Society, and
Buddhist Chaplain to the University of London. Also helped to
establish many other Buddhist centers in England.
Conducted lecture tours in Europe, United States and Japan. In
1956 he was at Nagpur as advisor to Dr. Ambedkar during mass
conversions of former ‘untouchables’ to Buddhism. |
