Grew up in his family's resort in the Catskill Mountains of New
York
Graduated from Columbia University, where he majored in
philosophy and this sparked an interest in both metaphysics and
spiritual inquiry.
Joseph first became interested in Buddhism as a Peace Corps
volunteer in Thailand in 1965 and had spend most of the next
eight years in Asia. Practiced under Munidra, Goenka and U
Pandita (1984-c93), and later with the Tibetans.
He has been teaching vipassana and metta retreats worldwide
since 1974. Co-founder of Insight Meditation Society (USA),
Barre Center for Buddhist Studies (USA) and Forest Refuge (USA),
a new center for long term meditation practice. He is the
guiding teacher of the Forest Refuge, the new retreat facility
for long-term meditation practice at Insight Meditation Society. |
