Read John Snelling for well-researched and structured presentation in mostly general works. His book The Buddhist Handbook is a classic reference on a brief history of Buddhism.



Born in Wales in 1943 and brought up there and in London and Canterbury.

Graduated with degrees in English and Philosophy. Lectured for some years at a provincial English art school before leaving for traveled in the East, where he became interested in Oriental religion and philosophy.

Involved in Buddhism since early 1970s, practicing mainly in the Zen and Theravada traditions. From 1980 to 1984 he was general secretary of the Buddhist Society, London and from 1980 until 1987 editor of The Middle Way, the Society’s quarterly journal.

Since 1984 he has been a freelance writer, broadcaster, and painter.
