English writer and translator specializing
in Buddhism and Taoism.
Born in 1913. Educated at Haileybury College and
Downing College, Cambridge. Read natural sciences at latter, did
not complete degree but left in second year and went to China.
Visited many monasteries in China (1933-1939). Became a pupil of
Master Hsu Yun but actually received training in Ch’an
meditation from his pupils at monastery, near Kunming, Yunnan.
He also received Vajrayana teachings. Taught at School of
Oriental Studies, London Universities (1939-1940). Served as
Cultural Attache, British Embassy in Chunking (1942-1945),
Chinese National Government scholarship to study T’ang Dynasty
Buddhism in Peking (1947-1949), taught in Hong Kong and Bangkok
(1949-1961). Also visited Darjeeling to study with Nyingma
teahcers including Dudjom Rinpoche and Dodrupchen Rinpoche .
Worked for United Nations (ECAFE) (1961-1974), Bangkok
((1974-1979), taught English at Kasetsart and Chulalongkorn
Universities, Bangkok. Conduct extensive lecture tours of
America and Canada (1978-1980). Later he was engaged in studying
Chinese composition and literature. |
