Scholar, translator of Tibetan Texts, interpreter to Dalai Lama, writer.

Born in 1940 and graduated from Harvard in 1940.

Studied for 6 years at Lamaist Buddhist Monastery of America and entered Buddhist Studies Program at University of Wisconsin, and received his PhD in 1966. Began teaching at University of Virginia (1973) where he founded the largest academic program of Tibetan Buddhism studies in the West.

Served as the chief interpreter to the Dalai Lama for a decade since 1979, touring North America, Europe, Australia and South East Asia.
