English Pali scholar, translator of Pali Canonical Text.

Read I.B.Horner for early scholarly and traditional translation, mainly on Sutta and Vinaya and a number of general research work on early Buddhism.


Born (Isaline Blew Horner) in 1896 in Walthamstow, England

Educated at Surrey and Newhham College, Cambridge, obtained BA (1917) and MA (1934). Served as Librarian of Newnham College in Cambridge (1918-21, 1923-36), a Research Fellow (1928-31), an associate (1931-59, 1962-76), and associate fellow (1939-49) and also served on the Governing Body (1939-49). She lived and worked in Manchester (1936-43) and London (1948-81)

Met the Rhys Davids when young. Commenced Pali studies in 1936 when the American scholar Kenneth J. Saunders introduced her to the Dhammapada. Served as secretary of Pali Text Society (1942-59) and later as President and Honorary Treasurer (1959-81).

In 1980, received the honor Order of the British Empire (OBE)
