Born in Hamburg and son of a minister. He studied classical and Indian philology in Berlin and graduated in 1878. Became a Professor of Indology in Kiel (1889) and later in Goettingen (1908). Obtained a doctorate in Berlin and worked as a private lecturer and became a Professor in Berlin (1881).

He wrote mainly on Indian philology, linguistics and history of Indian religion and its practices. His interest in Buddhism is mainly in its history, and later he attempts translation of many large Buddhist Pali canonical texts which was published by Sacred Books of the East. He remained for a very long time a most important representative of the question about the origins of Buddhism and the historical Buddha.
