Sri Lanka scholar, propagationist, writer.
Educated in St Johns College, Panadura, and
London University where he gained his MA, PhD, and D.Litt.
degrees. Taught at Ananda College and Nalanday Vidyalaya,
Colombo. He served as the Dean of Faculty of Oriental Studies at
University of Ceylon and also as the Professor of Pali
(1927-57).
Was the Founding President of World Fellowship of Buddhist
(1950); President of Ceylon Buddhist Congress; Hon Secretary and
Treasurer of Pali Text Society in Sri Lanka; the Editor-in-Chief
of the Encyclopedia of Buddhism (1966-1973)
Participated in UNESCO projects worldwide; appointed Ambassador
for Ceylon to Russia; also represented his country at United
Nations and was the High Commissioner for London. |
