Influential English Theravada Writer

Read Francis Story for short, accurate and persuasive work covering a wide area of general interests that is most relevant for those fresh to Buddhism. Reading his collected works in two volumes will provide sufficient foundation to understanding Buddhism


Born in 1910 at Surrey, UK

Became a self-confessed Buddhist after doing a study of comparative religion at age 16.

Educated at London University. Qualified in medicine and served in Royal Army Medical Corps in World War II, India. Went back to England for a year before returning to India to join Maha Bodhi Society. In 1948 he become Anagarika Sugatananda at Bodh Gaya, India.

He helped form Burma Buddhist World Mission (1950) and became its Director-in-Chief (1954), engaged in a preaching tour in Burma, from Mandalay to Rangoon, with Ven. Lokanatha (1951), joined the English Editorial Board of the Light of the Dhamma (1954), a foremost quarterly Theravada periodical by Union of Burma Buddha Sasana during the period 1952-63, lecture and broadcast for 10 years in Srilanka (since 1957).

Specialized in researching doctrine of rebirth with the world renowned Prof. Ian Stevenson, Virginia University, USA. In 1968 he conducts a lecture tour of USA on the same theme.
