He holds a PhD. in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia (1982), where he specialized in late Indian Mahayana Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism. As a Fulbright Scholar in India, he studied Madhayamika philosophy with leading Tibetan scholars. He has been a faculty member of the University of Michigan (since 1989) he presently chairs the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures (Buddhist Studies), and a faculty associate of the Center for Chinese Studies and Center for South Asian Studies. He was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2000).
