Read Donald Swearer on a western critical observation of Buddhist culture and its development in Southeast Asia.

 

  • Before being appointed Director of the Center for the Study of World Religions in 2004, he had taught at Swarthmore College since 1970, and most recently as the Charles and Harriet Cox McDowell Professor of Religion. Prior to that, he was a professor at both Oberlin and the University of Pennsylvania. He was the Numata Visiting Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Hawaii (1993).

  • He has previously served as a visiting professor at Brown University, Princeton Theological Seminary, Bryn Mawr College, and served as Hershey Visiting Professor of Buddhist Studies at the Divinity School (2001-02). He is also currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Buddhist Studies.

  • He has received multiple grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, a Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship, a Society for Religion in Higher Education grant, and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1994), in addition to several other leave support awards. He is a member of the Association for Asian Studies, the American Society for the Study of Religion, and the Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies. He has held a variety of editorial posts for several academic journals, including the Journal of Asian Studies, the Journal of Religious Ethics, the Journal of Comparative Sociology and Religion, and the Religious Studies Review.
