obvious especially in his comprehensive and authoritative essay
on meditation and mental development.
Born in 1922 in Imphal, India.
Educated at Institute of Engineering Technology, Calcutta and
was a Ramakrishna monk (1946-1948).
Ordained as a monk in 1949 and studied in Sri Lanka until 1952.
In 1952, went to Burma to study and practise meditation under
Mahasi Sayadaw until 1955. Also served in the Editorial Board,
did theTipitaka Translation during the Sixth Buddhist Council
during this time.
Taught at Nalanda Postgraduate Institute, Bihar University
(1955-1956) and in 1956 founded the famed Maha Bodhi Society,
Bangalore. Later, founded the International Meditation Center,
Buddha Vachana Publishers, Tipitaka Press, Maitri Mandala,
Mahabodhi Burns & Casualty Center (Bangalore), Artificial Limb
Center (Bangalore), Institute of Buddhology and Pali Studies (Mysore),
and Arogya Center.
Taught and conducted retreats in UK and USA and is a prolific
writer with more than 50 books published. |
