American
born bhikkhu, contemporary Pali scholar and translator.
Read Bhikkhu Bodhi for a fresh reading of
translational work of the Theravada Canonical Text. His approach
is extremely clear, precise, comprehensive, smooth and balanced
which makes learning and reflection of the sacred texts a joy.
Born as Jeffrey Block in 1944 in New York City, of Jewish
parentage.
Educated in
Brooklyn College where he obtained his BA in Philosophy (1966),
and obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Claremont Graduate
School (1972).
Interested in
Buddhism since his years in junior college. Received his first
instruction on Buddhism from a Vietnamese monk, Thich Giac Duc,
at the Vietnamese Buddhist Church of America, Washington, and
ordained by him as a novice in 1967.
Ordained as a
novice in the Theravada tradition in 1972 in Sri Lanka by Ven.
Ananda Mettreya Mahanayaka Thera, a famous Theravada monk and
six months later received his higher ordination. In 1975, he
traveled to India and met Ven. Buddharakkhita. In late 1975 he
went back to Sri Lanka and stayed with Ven. Nyanaponika near the
Forest Hermitage.
In 1977 he returned to the United States and
spent nearly 2 years at Lamaist Buddhist Monastery of Geshe
Wangyal and 3 years at Washington Buddhist Vihara. In 1982 he
returned to Sri Lanka and spent periods in meditation training
at Mitirigala Nissarana Vanaya. Stayed with Bhikkhu Nyanaponika
at the Forest Hermitage, Kandy and succeeded Bhikkhu Nyanaponika
as the editor and president of the Buddhist Publication Society,
1984 and 1988 respectively, until 2003. During this period, 1985
onwards, he was extensively engaged in both translation and
editing existing translation works of the Pali Canon. |
